What We Do
As part of the Government’s policy for all energy customers in Great Britain to have access to smart metering it asked the energy industry to find a solution to a problem that could affect hundreds of thousands of British homes where the components of their “home area network” – energy meters, in-home devices and communications hub – are too far apart to connect with each other.
Without a solution to this problem residents in affected buildings would be denied access to the full range of benefits that smart metering supports, such as real-time information on how much energy you are using and new services like smart prepay.
What We Are Delivering
Our mission is to develop range-extending products and services that integrate seamlessly into the smart meter rollout plans of energy suppliers. Our services are for all energy suppliers and for all customers that need them.
Since 2016 through Alt HAN Co the UK’s energy suppliers have been working collaboratively towards this goal. In 2021 we confirmed Landis & Gyr (L+G) as our preferred technology partner. Mass rollout of devices with energy suppliers began in October 2023, helping more customers who would normally be unable to gain the benefits of smart metering in their homes.
How We Operate
The ambition not to leave customers behind could only be met by the industry working together. Alt HAN is the vehicle to enable this to happen. A unique not-for-profit co-operative of all GB energy suppliers operating under regulations set by government.
- The Alt HAN Forum and its delegated expert sub-groups make the decisions required to carry out the activities and services of Alt HAN Co. The Forum is made up of representatives from the energy supply companies who make decisions under a weighted vote system according to their market share.
- The Alt HAN Company (Alt HAN Co) is the corporate entity that gives commercial effect to the Forum’s decisions. Board Members are elected by the Forum.
