What Others Say

What Does a Crowded Meter Room Look Like?

Crowded meter rooms are often characterised by cramped, poorly organised spaces where meters are stacked together with little to no room for maintenance or upgrades. In these conditions, installing smart meters becomes challenging and inefficient. Below are a few examples of what we typically encounter in buildings needing our services:

  • Overcrowded shelves: Meters are tightly packed with no space for upgrades.
  • Wires and cables cluttered together: Creates safety hazards and restricts easy access.
  • Limited or blocked access: Maintenance becomes difficult, and residents cannot easily view or manage their energy usage.

How to Report Your Crowded Meter Room

You can quickly report a crowded meter room by filling out our online contact form. Simply provide details like the property address, a description of the space, and your contact information.

2. Email:

Alternatively, reach out to our team directly via email at CMRProject@althanco.com.  One of our team members will get in touch to schedule a survey.

Our Successful Projects: Case Studies

Alt HAN Co has successfully helped property owners across the UK optimise their meter rooms and enable the installation of smart meters. Below are a couple of examples where our solution made a difference:

Case Study 1: Residential Building in Leicester

Managing Agent: PA Housing

Location: Leicester

Challenge:

At first glance, this meter room appears quite a tidy installation, with a number of smart meters already having been deployed. However, due to the distance from the meter room to a number of apartments, the Alt HAN solution is required to enable connectivity to the In-Home Display as well as to the externally located gas meters and there is insufficient space to deploy this.

Solution:

Alt HAN Co surveyed the space, re-organised the room, and created sufficient space for smart meter installations. We coordinated the works with the managing agent, and the entire process was completed with minimal disruption.

Outcome:

  • Electric and gas smart meters can now be deployed to all 78 apartments in the building.
  • Residents who have since had smart meters installed now have access to real-time energy usage data, leading to more efficient energy consumption and potentially lower bills.
  • The managing agent was kept informed throughout the whole process and also worked with us to support resident communications many of whom did not speak English.

Case Study 2: Commercial Property in Manchester

Building Owner: Anthem Management

Location: Leeds

Challenge:

The property’s meter room was cramped with old infrastructure that hindered smart meter upgrades. The building owner was worried about tenant disruption and potential costs.

Solution:

Alt HAN Co managed the entire process: surveying the meter room, creating the necessary space, and ensuring that all work was completed with minimal disruption to residents.

Outcome:

  • The building is now ready for any future smart meter installation requests from all 28 residents.
  • The building owner was relieved of any costs as the Energy Suppliers funded the upgrades.
  • The property is compliant with upcoming energy regulations and is now better equipped for the future.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A crowded meter room refers to a space where electrical meters and wiring are overcrowded, making it difficult to add or replace smart meters. These rooms often have little space for proper installation or maintenance, which can prevent Energy Suppliers from upgrading to smart meters.

Alt HAN Co works with energy suppliers to clear space in overcrowded meter rooms. We provide a full-service solution to organise and optimise these rooms, ensuring that they are ready for smart meter installation. All work is carried out at no cost to the building owner, with funding provided by the energy suppliers.

There is no cost to you. All of the work, including the reorganisation of the meter room and any necessary upgrades, is fully funded by the energy suppliers. You are only required to give consent for the work to proceed.

Simply provide consent by filling out our online consent form or by contacting us directly. Once consent is given, we will schedule a survey to assess your meter room and plan the required work.

We aim to minimise disruption. Our team works quickly and efficiently, coordinating the timing of the works to ensure that there is minimal impact on residents. Most of the work will be done during normal working hours and we will work with residents to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Yes. While the work is focused on the meter room, which is a shared utility space, there will be a need for some residents to be taken off supply for a short period of time (usually around 1 hour). Residents will not need to be involved in the reorganisation process itself, but where there is a need to take a resident off supply, we will give plenty of notice that the works are being undertaken and work with them on the day to agree a suitable time. Smart meters will only be installed when residents request them from their energy supplier.

If your meter room is overcrowded with meters, wires, or old equipment, it may need upgrading. We encourage you to report crowded meter rooms using our online form or by contacting us directly at CMRProject@althanco.com. We can usually determine outline requirements from any photographs that are provided, and where necessary a simple survey of your meter room will determine what work is needed.

Once you provide consent, the process typically takes 3-4 weeks for the survey and another 2 months for the necessary upgrades to be completed. Smart meter installation can then be scheduled with your energy supplier. The entire process is designed to be as efficient as possible, with minimal disruption.

Yes! Smart meters allow tenants and property owners to monitor energy usage in real time, leading to more efficient energy consumption. This can help reduce energy bills and contribute to your building’s sustainability efforts.

Yes, once the meter room is cleared and optimised, tenants can request a smart meter installation from their energy supplier. This process is handled directly by the supplier, and it will be more straightforward now that the meter room is ready.

Without your consent, we will not be able to proceed with the work. However, we recommend proceeding with the upgrade as it helps future-proof your building, improves energy efficiency, and makes it easier for tenants to access smart meter benefits.

You can report a crowded meter room by filling out our online reporting form. You can also contact us via email at CMRProject@althanco.com. A survey will be scheduled, and we’ll guide you through the next steps.

Upgrading your meter room will:

  • Make it easier for tenants to install smart meters.
  • Improve energy efficiency and potentially lower bills.
  • Help comply with upcoming energy regulations.
  • Increase the overall value and appeal of your property.
